We're so excited to announce our next exhibition of photographs by Richard Murai:

Richard Murai

Artist's Statement:

As light moves, shadows shift and practitioners of an ancient faith celebrate, pray and reflect amidst sacred symbols, iconography and temple architecture. The religious complex provide revered spaces for prayer and devotion, and timeworn surfaces of wood, stone, metal and cloth offer temporal constancy and ancestral connections for generations of devotees, and a lush visual landscape for the visitor.

These photographs are selections from my travels in Asia that reveal visual artifacts and rituals from a golden age as people seek to reconcile and preserve ancient traditions amidst conflicting modern values. The images comprise an ongoing voyage of discovery and exploration that documents sacred spaces and evidence of spiritual devotion, past and present, within unique and distinctive cultures.

Christopher Burkett: A Private Collection

Artist's Biography

Christopher Burkett was born in 1951 and was reared in the Pacific Northwest. In 1975, while he was a brother in a Christian order, he became interested in photography as a means of expressing the grace, light and beauty he saw present in the world of nature. Over the next twenty years, he gradually perfected his craft so photography could be the means through which he could express his innermost feelings and inspiration. Today he works almost exclusively with color 8 x 10" transparencies.

In 1979, Burkett left the brotherhood to pursue photography and married his wife, Ruth. He learned the offset printing process and ran four-color printing presses and laser scanners to create detailed color separations. These years of experience in the printing trade helped develop his fine discernment of color and gave him a deep understanding of the principles of color and tone reproduction.
Today Burkett travels extensively throughout the United States to photograph. His masterful printing and numerous exhibitions rapidly brought him international acclaim. His photographs are featured in many public and private fine art collections. Burkett also has taught several workshops sponsored through the Friends of Photography and Anderson Ranch Arts Center.
Burkett is a recognized national expert in printing Cibachrome (Ilfochrome), by virtue of his use of sophisticated and unique masking techniques. He meticulously hand prints his 8 x 10" transparencies to 20 x 24", 30 x 40", and 40 x 50", with impressive sharpness and rich tonality. All images are archivally overmatted, signed and numbered by the artist.

About Me

My photo
The Weston Gallery opened in 1974 and remains one of the oldest and most respected gallery of its kind, a world leader in the field of fine vintage and contemporary photography. This position of leadership stems from our deep dedication to the medium. We deal specifically in photographs as works of art. We emphasize those works which we feel are important in the overall history of 19th, 20th and 21st Century art. We are fortunate to have an extensive inventory and a wealth of knowledge available to assist any collector. While we are great generalists in the medium of photography, we are most effective in dealing with specific inquiries. We invite you to visit us on Sixth Avenue in Carmel, California. We are open daily from 10:30 AM - 5:30 PM (Pacific Time). You may also contact us by phone at (831) 624-4453 or by email: info@westongallery.com.
